"My" (not so) crazy theories about the mark of the beast...
Yes, we are getting biblical in this one...
I am saying "my" theories, because while I did indeed make that connection on my own, I am of course not the first one to do so. I am gonna start with the more popular theories, which I find interesting, but also with which personally I don't completely agree with. But who says that only one interpretation can be correct?
Anyway, first we need to recap what the Bible says. The book of Revelation makes it clear that it is a vision about the future as seen by John (of Patmos). Among other things, John describes a great red dragon and again the book of Revelation explains itself and makes it clear that this imagery isn't meant to be taken literally, but symbolizes certain political leaders.
Anyway, a beast comes out of the sea and one form of the beast is "like a leopard" (who strangely enough is also part bear). And at one point it seemed as if the beast was about to die as it’s head was mortally wounded, but it survived and the red dragon gave it its authority and made it "speak great things and blasphemies" and "it opened its mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven. It was granted to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation. All who dwell on the earth will worship him, whose names have not been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. If anyone has an ear, let him hear. He who leads into captivity shall go into captivity; he who kills with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints."
Personally I feel that part about the beast fighting with the saints and overcoming them and about the consequences of killing and the part about being in captivity and the need for the saints to be patient might hint at religious persecution.
Anyway, it goes on with the famous part about the mark and number of the beast:
"Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. And he exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence, and causes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth by those signs which he was granted to do in the sight of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who was wounded by the sword and lived. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666."
So it’s a symbol that represents a beast and a man and it’s worn on the right hand or the forehead and you can’t engage in the ecenomy without it and this symbol can be either a mark, a name, or a number and if it’s the latter, then it’s 666.
Now the most popular way to answer who this is referring to is by using gematria and using Hebrew where you can assign numbers to letters and then you write out Emperor Nero (in Hebrew) and you add up the numerical values of all the letters and it adds up to 666. That's the most popular explanation and the most widely accepted. And I am not saying it's wrong. Actually in a way I agree with it. But it can't be the ultimate explanation. Simply because as I said, the book of Revelation makes clear that it's supposed to be a vision of the future, but at the time it was written, Nero was already dead and also Nero has no relation to any red dragon or leopard - real or symbolical. Neither does it explain the part about not being able to buy or sell.
Also, the book of Revelation wasn't written in Hebrew, but in Greek, so there is no real reason to use Hebrew letters instead of Greek ones. So let's use Greek letters. 666 in Greek is χξϛ and that's (basically) how it would have been written in the original text.
Which brings us to this theory:
Again, I don’t really believe that this is the ultimate explanation, but again I find it interesting, especially because especially nowadays Islamic terrorists love to wear bandanas which put those letters right on their forehead. It also fits because Jews and Christians are indeed persecuted in many Muslim countries and from a Jewish or Christian perspective, claiming something that looks suspicously similar to the number of the beast would be the true name of God instead of it being Yahweh, could certainly be seen as blaspheming his name.
But again, it doesn’texplain the red dragon or the leopard or not being able to buy or sell.
So, here is “my” theory.
Of course this is the Chinese variant from the Mao era, which is propably the most (in)famous version of it and is also notable because even though that’s of course the cap of the Chinese "People’s Liberation Army”, durring Mao’s time EVERYONE (military or civilian) basically had to wear it, ESPECIALLY if he wanted to buy and sell as the entire economy was under State control, which is the whole point of socialism - socialism is simply a State controlled economy. So if you don’t do what Mao (the head of State) tells you (like wearing those silly hats) you can’t participate in the economy, so you can’t buy or sell - which of course includes food and so eventually you will starve - if you don’t get send to a forced labor camp first.
All other communist regimes have similar versions of this cap and symbol - the 5 pointed red star. Which is the only symbol (I know) that symbolizes both a man and a beast at the same time.
And that would also explain the Red Dragon itself - in a symbolical sense.
Speaking of communist countries, what about the Soviet Union? If Communist China is the red dragon, what’s the Soviet Union? Certainly that would be the most famous communist country. I am just gonna spell it out - that’s the leopard (who is also part bear) who was mortally wounded but survived thanks to the red dragon. Bear and Russia is obvious. But leopard? Well, take an old globe and look at the Soviet Union. What shape is it in?
I would show you a photo of the map, but because of the curvature of the earth you can’t see it as well on a two dimensional map. Well, you can still kinda see the shape - but on a globe it’s unmistakable. More specifically the Bible says that its head was mortally wounded but it survived because of the red dragon giving it its authority. Well, look at the shape of the Soviet Union again, can you see the shape of the leopard? Where is its head? It’s the part that’s most west - the Eastern European Soviet States. And Russia is its body. Which countries separated from Russia when the Soviet Union collapsed? The Eastern European Soviet States - its head.
Who is supplying Russia with soldiers and weapons to fight against Ukraine (one of the countries that broke off) even as we speak? China.
But hey, that's just a theory, a Bible theory!
